One of the main ways I get non-work things done alongside family responsibilities (which for me include partners and church) is by keeping weekends free. I rarely do anything social at the weekends unless it's related to family, and I try to limit that as well, preferably to things that can be done locally and/or things that will benefit my health in some way in addition to the family benefit. Any time on Saturdays that isn't taken up with family social stuff is for working on my personal Next Action lists; any time on Sundays that isn't taken up with family social stuff is for R&R, i.e. nothing that feels like a chore, except for meal preparation and cleanup.
